How to be allergy-friendly on Halloween *Free Printable

Halloween is a such a fun holiday for kiddos! However, the parents of kids with food allergies really have to up their guard! Obviously, it is ultimately the parents' job to sort through what their kids can and cannot eat. So, why should you continue to read if you don't have a kid with a food allergy? Simply put, you don't want to be the house that hands out a side of anaphylactic shock with those fun size candy bars!

This year, be sure that you are ready for all of the little ones that trick-or-treat at your home. Even if a kid with food allergies collects treats to take home, their parents will have to throw out what they can't have. So instead, let's work together to make this easier for you and the kids! To start, I put together a few tips and a free printable for your front door!

1. Have two treat buckets instead of throwing all of the treats in one. In the first one, feel free to put all of the traditional candy. In the second one, include allergy-friendly treats. My go-to candies are Dum Dums, Smarties and Tootsie Rolls. For lists of just gluten-free candy click here and here. You could also include non-food items such as stickers, mini-bubbles or small packs of crayons. Be sure to let parents know that this option is available by posting this cute printable on your mailbox and front door!

To print, right click and save the file to your computer. If your printer is out of ink- you can upload it to your local photo center and order a print that way. (If they ask for permission- here it is! This is a free printable and The Puzzled Palate approves the printing of this file- as long as the web address remains on the bottom of the image.)

2. If you are hosting a party, not all of your ghoulish goodies have to be allergy-friendly- but make at least one thing that everyone can have. (Unless one of your guests has a contact allergy!) Click here to see my favorite Halloween treats- both sweet and savory!

3. Spread the word! Don't be the only one on your block that has the sign! The majority of people do not have food allergies and they won't even think about how important it is make their home an allergy-friendly stop on the trick-or-treat trail! Feel free to share this link with your friends and family!

Happy Halloween!

  3. Good tips! You don't really see that many snacks with raspberries in them, but you know we have TONS of dumdums leftover from potty training! To the allergy free treat bowl they go!

  14. My mom used to wrap tootsie roll pops in kleenex for us when we were kids. She used pipe cleaners so the ghosts had hands :)

  15. Yummy! I'll take one of each, please :) Personally, I've always been a sucker for candy corn. My daughter has some food sensitivities and allergies, so I am always on the lookout for delicious and savory treats. Thank you for sharing this!
