Today was a very exciting day, M started Kindergarten!
We could not have asked for today to have gone any better than it actually did. M woke up in a great mood, got dressed and ate all of her breakfast! She was super excited to see a card on the table addressed to her. Thanks Nonni and Gandan for the card- she loves it!
Since we prepared as much as possible the night before school, we made it out the door with time to spare. We did not want to push our luck with a cute sign, so I designed one to pair with her picture. I still can't believe how cooperative she was during the rushed photo shoot- we have NO bad pictures from this morning!
Since we live super close to the school, there are no buses to worry about. The walk to school is about 8 minutes depending on how much dancing is done on the way there.
Once we arrived to the classroom, M was a little tentative. However, thanks to an amazing experience at Pre-K last year, she was more than prepared and excited for her new status as a kindergarten student.
She walked in and put away her book bag before telling me, "Mommy, I do not think I can do this." We assured her that she would have fun and that she would do great. The hubby and I took turns sitting with her at her desk while she got situated.
Again this year, the stars aligned and one of her classmates from the previous year was assigned to the chair next to hers! When she saw him come in the room, I think that it gave her the connection that she needed. She gave us hugs and focused on her first official "assignment" as a kindergartener- a beautiful garden scene.

We slowly backed out the door, slow enough that she would not freak out that we were leaving her abruptly. She acknowledged that we were leaving and that was it. No tears-not even from Mommy! As we walked home with Peanut, we talked about how surreal it was to have just dropped off our first baby off for kindergarten. Where does the time go?
This afternoon, I walked back to the school to pick her up. She was excited to see me and has had nothing bad to say about her day. She is ready to go back again!
If you are a frequent reader, I know you have been expecting a throwback to Pre-K. I would hate to disappoint you- so here it is!

ReplyDeleteMy daughter started her 1st day of 1st grade yesterday. Last year I'm pretty sure I was more nervous than my daughter. I remember her telling me mommy I've got this and she went about her thing. Yesterday we walked her in since we are in a new town and new school. She was super brave and unpacked her bag and set down and was good to go. She is definitely braver than me, which I love. When I started kindergarten I was 4 and I cried for my mom until she finally said ok I was to young and held me back another year. haha
ReplyDeleteAwwww. She looks so cute going to school. I am so glad she had a good day.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe summer is coming to a close, or at a close, for so many of us! I'm glad she had a good day! My son is getting ready to start his last day of elementary school. After that I won't have any in elementary school anymore. It will be bittersweet.

Congratulations, Mommy and Daddy! And it doesn't hurt a bit to be in walking distance to the school! How wonderful! :)

ReplyDeleteI think the sleep issue is particularly problematic in the US because we have placed such a high priority on after-school sports. Years ago when I was an exchange student in Germany, sports were primarily non-school based. Perhaps other countries don't have as big of a problem with teenager sleep issues in part because other countries don't overvalue sports in the educational system. about vimax-reviews
ReplyDeleteThe research is already crystal clear, and has been since the 1990s, that running high schools from about 7 am till about 2 pm is harming teen health and learning. The problem is not the research. It's lack of political will to change, and without some support and guidelines from educational leaders, that will isn't going to change on a local level. This is a public health issue and can't be treated as a negotiable budget item. vimax-australia reviews
ReplyDeleteIt's a relief to hear someone discuss later school start times - a conversation we desperately need to be having. Secretary Duncan can be a leader in setting some guidelines toward a more ideal time for learning based on the science about sleep needs and adolescent/teen biology. Thirty years of needless sleep-deprivation based on bus schedules needs to end now. Imagine a generation of learners well-rested, happier, making better lifestyle choices, retaining information and getting the best out of their educations. Ask the economist on your panel about the cost-benefit ratio of 1 to 9 in changing to later start time (Brookings Institute Hamilton Report on School Improvement). vimax-canada reviews
